São Carlos is located on the geographic center of the São Paulo state, approximately 231 km (144 mi) from the city of São Paulo. With a population of 243,765 inhabitants, spread over a total area of 1,137,332 km², it is the 13th largest city in the interior of the state in terms of number of residents.

Its altitude is over 856 m, offering a mild altitude climate. Most of the year the city is windy, sunny and with mild temperatures at night. For this reason, the city is nicknamed "Cidade do Clima" (Weather City) and celebrates once a year an event called "Festa do Clima", or "Weather Festival".

The city stands out for the research institutions focused on high technology. It has a large number of companies and technological centers, developed around two of the most outstanding universities in the country: The Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), and the University of São Paulo with two campuses in São Carlos. The floating population thanks to these universities is almost thirty thousand undergraduates and post-graduates, much of it attracted from other cities and states.

In addition to these two universities, São Carlos has two research centers of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa): Embrapa Instrumentation and Embrapa Southeast Livestock. The first is a basic theme research unit, created with the purpose of integrating knowledge areas such as Physics and Engineering with agriculture, which is engaged in the development of instrumentation technologies for agribusiness such as machinery, equipment, sensors, and process automation. The second is a ecoregional research unit that develops research on dairy and beef cattle production, sheep farming, and forage crops. It also works with animal and plant breeding, environmental aspects of husbandry, and intensive production systems, aiming at the sustainable use of the biomes of the Brazilian Southeast.
